CHAPTER NINE
Friday, mid-afternoon
There was a man in a black Navigator across the street from the Brooklyn house. He’d been there for the better part of the day. Ian wondered who he was. The other painters would be getting ready to leave soon. He had one more run of molding to finish before he called it a night. He bid the other painters good night and watched them pull away in two vans.
He got a creepy feeling and began to lock doors and windows despite the smell of paint. He peeked out the window, and the man from the Navigator was coming his way. That man is coming here. Maybe Rémy sent someone other than Luc to pick me and André up.
All of a sudden, four other black Navigators pulled up and surrounded the man. They had weapons. Roland spoke briefly to him, and then he got into his car and drove away.
Roland got out of one of the SUVs. He came to the house and knocked on the door. Ian opened it.
Roland snapped, “Where’s André? He’s supposed to be here with you?”
“He went out to get more soda. We’re running low. What is going on out there? That man had a gun and was heading this way.” Ian shook.
“Ferrara got out on a technicality. He still has to stand trial for the loan sharking and the murders, but until the D.A. builds his case, Ferrara is running around free as a bird. You fingered him. He’s going to be as happy with you as he was with your father and brother. On top of that, he’s Don Ferone’s favorite nephew. Rémy said you should come home with me.” Roland waited for the inevitable argument.
“I can’t put the whole house in danger. I’ll go to my apartment. No one knows that someone lives there.” Ian’s mouth set in a straight line.
“You see those men outside? They work for Rémy. They’re his guards. If you don’t come with me, they’ll stay here with you, and there’ll be no one with Rémy except Luc.”
“Ferone will leave Rémy alone if I’m gone,” Ian said, being practical.
“He won’t. By calling in Murphy, Rémy involved himself with Ferrara and therefore Ferone. Armand and Sean are coming in from Pittsburgh with twelve more Enfor—uh guards. We’re burning time here.”
“I’ll go, but only because Rémy would be in danger if I went back to Queens and he sent those guys there to take care of me instead of doing their job and taking care of Rémy.” Ian started to wash his brushes.
“Never mind that—we’ll buy new ones. Call the other painters tonight and tell them they have three weeks off with pay. We’ll be going to the Catskills. If Rémy’s talk with Don Ferone doesn’t go well, both you and Rémy will be safer there.”
“We have to wait for André,” Ian said, obviously not willing to leave his friend behind. It was a good thing that André pulled up into the driveway, because Ian thought Roland was going to carry him off.
